FEATURED PROJECT: AIR FORCE BASE PHARMACY

February 15th

A major military base recently constructed a new Base Exchange with an on-site pharmacy where military personnel and their families are able to easily fulfill their prescription needs.

The design objective was to create an efficient workspace that offered plenty of storage and “quick-pick” accessibility to prescriptions and supplies. It was important to consider the pharmacist’s workflow requirements in order to provide the shelving, mobile workstations, and proper storage needed to optimize productivity.

With workflow being vital, we provided mobile work tables giving the pharmacy ultimate flexibility in their day to day tasks. Our Multi-Frame System integrates traditional wall-shelving with our Modular Millwork cabinets. The adjustable shelving allows the pharmacists to keep all prescriptions and supplies in clear view and within ergonomic reach improving concentrated productivity. Dimmable task lights were installed beneath each of the bottom shelves to ensure sufficient lighting on top of the entire work surface. Each of the island workstation base cabinets were designed with angled gravity fed drawers to enhance workflow and reduce fatigue by keeping the prescription dispensers organized, visible and conveniently accessible.

In addition to the workstations, we provided two-tier personal lockers for the pharmacist’s and staff with hasp cam locks. Four-post shelving along the exterior wall of the room will provide improved organizational storage of medication and supplies. A customized bottle dispenser was designed for the pharmacy with an acrylic front panel for easy picking and refilling of prescription containers. The in-depth field analysis, unmatched flexibility of the Modular Millwork product and successful installation ensure the military base has the pharmacy they need for their new Base Exchange.

ORGANIZING CHAOS

With Versia’s expertise, we reworked the footprint, created organization from chaos, and the result is a highly productive, efficient and comfortable space to work in.

By utilizing our MoreSpace product line, we were able to create more work space on the surface and keep the work surface free from clutter. Understanding workflow demands helps us to create a highly functional, ergonomical and operational environment. MoreSpace accessories can include risers, monitor arms, task lighting, adjustable shelves, and electrical cord containment clips.

Our Modular Millwork Base Cabinets have a structural steel frame which makes the system truly modular for any reconfiguration needed in the future. The steel frames come in seven powder-coated colors, and there are 19 standard laminate finishes. Work surfaces are available in a variety of options from laminate, solid surface and resin, to stainless steel and bactericial surfaces. EVIDENCE-BASED DESIGN

Evidence-based design (EBD) is the process of basing decisions about the built environment on credible research to achieve the best possible outcomes.

Many recent studies have examined how the physical environment can influence well-being, promote healing, relieve patient pain and stress, and also reduce medical errors, infections and falls.

For many years, our health-care design industry has worked to achieve all of the above items in health-care environments. The goal has been to have every space feel harmonious, warm, to use color psychology to promote quick recovery time, to use materials that were warm to the touch and art work that promotes health, healing and recovery. This is a departure from the typical cold, sterile and institutional health-care environments. Now, with so many studies of infection control, the next step and the designers/architects job is to specify and use materials that reduce infections, which will complete the circle of EBD.
